This August, Katydata wakes up to the sounds of winds and embarks on new music explorations. The alto saxophones of Thodoris Rellos (Mode Plagal) and Zakari Frantz (of the Souljazz Orchestra) take us to Balkan and African routes, trumpets and clarinets twist through jazz, soul and classical music paths, drums mingle with the winds of a band, a zurna and a davul call for dancing…
Windcraft Music Fest returns for the third time to Katydata for two days of concerts, workshops and other activities. Bands and new collaborations from Cyprus, Greece and Canada with winds as their main ingredient will present their personal music interpretation, blending different traditions and creating new fusion sounds. The worlds of ethnic, jazz, soul, African, classical and traditional music will unite, just to prove once more that different cultures can co-exist.

The festival aims at promoting the musical creativity of the artists and involving the visitors in the magic of creating music. In the beautiful village setting, the traditional environment blends harmonically with the modern art scene, bringing musicians and music lovers closer in a festive atmosphere!
The yard of the village’s old inn, the orchard and other picturesque locations will be transformed to host this year’s bands. On the first festival day (12/8), the Mythic Journey Quartet – a new project of the Canadian saxophonist of the epic Souljazz Orchestra, Zakari Frantz, and the Greek musicians Don Stavrinos, Stathis Diamantidis and Yiannis Despotakis – will create an uplifting atmosphere with their Afrospiritual grooves. The Original Quartet (Marios Charalambous, Kyriacos Kestas, Andreas Panteli, Andreas Combos) will perform original, jazz-influenced compositions and the ethnic project Trio NeRo (Nektarios Rodosthenous, Christos Agathocleous, George Savva) will re-contextualize traditional lullabies giving them a rock dimension. The Clarinettini Quartet will open the second day of the festival (13/8) with classical and instrumental music. The young and powerful Drumble Beats will then put their drums and handmade percussion next to the winds of the Windcraft Band and the Trio Frisson, in the company of the trumpet player Elias Ioannou, will introduce us to their Hip-Soul sound. Finally, “the most ground-breaking music group of the Greek ethnic jazz scene” (fRoots), Mode Plagal, will bring the evening to the peak with a groovy journey to the roots of our musical past.
Free music workshops on various topics that combine learning with fun will invite children and adults to participate in the music creation, while other interactive activities will be taking place involving locals and foreign visitors. Traditional Cypriot winds will be given a special place in the festival: a zurna and a davul will mark the opening of the festival, while a folk musician will demonstrate how to make and play the traditional flute pithkiavli. Interactivity between the locals and the visitors will be encouraged through an exploration activity in the village, that will be organised by the “Youth for Exchange and Understanding”.
