Tsimbita: Rébétiko songs of the guitar [24hour shot – music]
«Tsimpiti» means «pinched». Born in the beginning of the 20th century, in urban centers of the USA, the « pinched guitar» (kithara tsimbiti) was developed and represented mainly by Yorgos Katsaros, Kostas Dousas and Kostas Bezos. Refering to the way of playing, this term describes a guitar technique consisting of pinching the guitar strings with the right hand inspired by the fingestyle playing of afro American guitar players. The term also describes a distinct category inside the rebetiko repertoire. A category of songs played by a guitar player, who plays the lead and the rhythm parts at the same time, thus creating a new aesthetic concerning the approach of the instrument and the interpretation.
