The Nutcracker Story is performed in two Acts, three scenes: composed by the famous Tchaikovsky and choreographed by Marious Petipa and Ivanov. "The Nutcracker”, originally know as “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” is a story written in 1816 by German author E. T. A. Hoffmann, and retold by Alexandre Dumas in 1844. It is this version, which is used as the basis for the Tchaikovsky ballet. In the original E.T.A. Hoffmann story, the young heroine is called Marie Stahlbaum and Clara is her doll's name, but in the adaptation by Dumas on which Petipa based his libretto, her name Clara.
The Nutcracker is one of the “Classics,” performed all over the world, at Christmas, by all the famous ballet companies. The music is especially familiar to even those who have never seen the ballet and many pieces have been used in Television and Media advertising: such as the Overture, Trepak, Waltz of Flowers and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
The story evolves on Christmas Eve, in the house of Clara and her parents. In the first act all the guests arrive and during the celebrations Clara is given a present of a Nutcracker Doll by her Godfather and toymaker Drosselmeyer. As the feast ends and the guests leave, Clare goes quietly to bed but remembering her Nutcracker Doll goes to retrieve it and falls asleep. Suddenly the clock strikes twelve, and she is transported in to an imaginary wonderland. The Christmas tree magically grows and all the presents including the Nutcracker come alive. Giant mice and soldiers invade the room and a Battle ensues. At the end of the Battle, the Nutcracker wins and with Clara’s help he becomes transformed in to a beautiful Prince. Then their journey begins, and they are transported through the Land of Snow, before, in the second act, arriving in the magical Kingdom of Sweets. Here, they are entertained by many dolls from various countries, who represent sweets and treasures from their shores and the Prince accompanies the Sugar Plum Fairy in a beautiful Pas de Deux.
When Clara awakes from her dream, she finds herself still holding her beloved Nutcracker Doll.
