March 25th 2018 marks 100 years to the day since the death of French impressionist composer, Achille-Claude Debussy, better known today simply as Claude Debussy. He himself however wasn’t particularly fond of the term “impressionist”, preferring instead to call himself a “symbolist” in line with the literary movement manifest in France towards the end of the 19th century. Irrespective of terms though, one thing is certain: the use, by the composer, of non-traditional (up till then) tonalities and the extensive use of chromaticism are both elements which influenced many composers who followed. An evening then with – for some, maybe – novel but fascinating tonal colours, through the enchanting combination of flute, viola and harp.
