March 20th every year is designated as International Francophonie Day (Journée Internationale de la Francophonie) and is observed within the International Organization of La Francophonie’s 77 member-states to celebrate the French language and Francophone culture. Cyprus holds an observer status in the organisation, with events marking the day taking place throughout the island for the whole of the month. Joining in these is also the CySO with a programme consisting entirely of French composers, including Claude Debussy, for whom the 25th of the month this year also marks 100 years from his death. Along with Debussy however, three other fin-de-siecle composers: Faure with his poignant “Pelléas et Mélisande”, Saint-Säens with his Cello concerto no. 1 and Ravel with his always-appealing “Mother Goose Suite”.
