Birdwatching is a fun and affordable way for a family to come closer to nature. It encourages focus and observation in children and cultivates their love for nature. BirdLife Cyprus is organising two birdwatching outings for families, one at Athalassa Park and one at Oroklini Lake, to introduce both adults and children to the enchanting world of birds and birdwatching.
These birdwatching outings have a dual purpose: on one hand, to cultivate in children and adults their love for nature and birds, to teach them to use their eyes and their ears to find and observe birds out in the wild and to teach them how to use binoculars and bird identification guides. On the other hand, to encourage parents to spend a special and memorable morning with their children out in nature. Together we will learn why some birds migrate, why some of them have such long legs, why male birds have more colourful plumage than the females and many more.
Oroklini Lake and Athalassa Park are ideal locations for birdwatching as both provide shelter for many bird species. Apart from migratory species, during our excursions we will also see species that live and breed permanently at these two locations. Species we may see include Coot, Moorhen, Mallard, Shoveler, Teal, Grey Heron, Little Egret, Spur-winged Lapwing, Black-winged Stilt, Francolin, Kingfisher, Goldfinch, Blackcap, Kestrel and many more!
Through various educational and fun activities participants will enhance their observation skills and enrich their knowledge about the natural world. Each outing has a duration of 1.5 hour and is aimed at children ages 6 – 12 years old and their parents/guardians. Participation is free of charge.
We will provide binoculars, telescopes, bird guides, activity sheets and other relevant material. The outings will be conducted in Greek.
The outing in Larnaka will take place on:
Sunday, 13 November 2016, 10:30 – 12:00, Oroklini Lake, Larnaka
All children are required to be accompanied by a parent or a guardian.
Pre-registration is required due to limited availability.
