The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia presents the temporary exhibition “Threads of Tradition: Laces and Lace Embroideries of Cyprus”, from the 12th of April 2016 until the 31st of October 2016.
The dexterous hands of Cypriot women knitted knot into knot and sewed stich upon stich to craft laces and lace embroideries that would embellish their future home. However, such handicrafts were also produced for commercial purposes and were destined both for domestic as well as foreign markets.
The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, through a unique presentational exhibition, unfolds these threads of tradition and their history, through a selection of famous Cypriot threaded compositions and lace embroideries. The exhibition “Threads of Traditions: laces and lace embroideries of Cyprus” aims to offer to the visitor a new opportunity to experience and to learn on the subject of Cypriot lace and lace embroidery, invaluable elements of our intangible cultural heritage. A range of “threaded exhibits” with veniz lace, Lefkara lace embroidery, kopaneli, bibilla lace, frivolite lace and crochet lace traveled from Lefkara, Lapithos, Koilani, Omodos and finally from Lefkosia and found their special place at the exhibition revealing their enchanting secrets.
In the exhibition the art of the past meets contemporary art by introducing a small art intervention of a shadow-sculpture, by the Cypriot visual artists Simoni Symeonidou. The shadow-sculpture depicts an old lady from Lekfosia sewing.
The Museum invites the public to another unique museum experience by opening a new doorway, to the fascinating history of the craft of lace and lace embroidery in Cyprus.
