Exhibition of traditional costumes and items named ”Similarities and dissimilarities of the traditional costume of Romania-Cyprus”. Results of a research program between Nicosia cultural folklore group and the Muresul dance group from Turku Muress, Romania, with the cooperation of the municipality of Larnaka and the Cyprus handicraft of Cyprus.
Presentation by Attila Barabasi and Rea Ioannidou
The traditional costume exhibition with the participation of Romania will be an interactive event that will be unforgettable to all who attend it. We plan to organize it in such a way as to leave with the best impressions and having learned not only details of when and how these clothes were worn, but also how they manufactured them, found the materials and how they worked out the most, we will also organize a test point where visitors can try and create pieces of a traditional costume. The history of the tradition of Cyprus - Romania and the results of the "Similar and dissimilar" research for our traditional costumes will also be shown on giant screens.
Creative Concept: The exhibition is a collaboration and a special program of exchange of knowledge with the tradition of Romania, and research will be carried out by scientists of volunteers from both countries throughout the year to record the possible similarities and dissimilarities of the Cypriot and Romanian national costumes.
Aim: Traditional costumes started going extinct. In Cyprus the opportunities for the general public to transfer knowledge about this subject, as well as the development of relevant skills, are non-existent. We believe that this gap will be covered by this proposal. We will offer the opportunity for visitors of all nationalities and especially for young people to learn and train around the traditional costume of which sustainability is threatened. Our goals are also to support mobility and cooperation at national and international level, since apart from Cypriot craftsmen and Cypriot costumes we will have artisans and costumes from other countries and will be a pole of attraction for many tourists.
Special cooperation with Othon Charalambous: Within the framework of the research, the well-known fashion designer, Othon Charalambous, studied the embroidery and adapted it to modern men's apparel. We will show this work by displaying men's fashion on the opening day and then we will exhibit the clothes for the duration of the exhibition.
To whom it is addressed: The traditional costume exhibition is addressed to all population groups with particular emphasis on young people and the student population of Cyprus of all ages. This will require permission from the Ministry of Education for organized visits to the site as well as tourists in cooperation with the CTO.
