Glyn Hughes was born in north Wales in 1931 and educated at Holywell Grammar School. He studied art at Bretton Hall in Yorkshire then taught art and drama in London for three years before coming to Cyprus in 1956. In 1960 when Cyprus became independent he started APOPHASIS with the outstanding Cypriot artist, Christoforos Savva. This was a pioneering venture and became the centre of Cypriot contemporary art. Christoforos Savva died in 1967. Since that time he has been painting continually. Hughes taught art at the English school, Nicosia where he also ran the pre-university youth club. Later Hughes was to start SYNERGY an annual group exhibition / installationary activity. This was cut down by the Coup and Turkish Invasion but the artist continued to paint. He has had one person exhibitions in Cyprus and the U.K., and represented Cyprus at the Cairo Triennale. Shows: Athens, London, Beirut, German, Switzerland, Cyprus, China, and Australia. In theatre design he has worked in Cyprus, U.K., Greece, Germany, and the USA. He had been Arts Editor for The Cyprus Weekly and for ten years he had been organising SYMPOSIART a series of lectures on British Art for The British Council and the Nicosia Municipal Centre. A retrospective exhibition tour covering the last fifty years of Glyn Hughes career took place in Wrexham, Wales, U.K. near the end of 2005. Two years after Glyns death the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre (NiMac), in collaboration with the Pierides Foundation and the Cultural Services of the Ministri of Education and Culture organized and presented the major retrospective exhibition Glyn Hughes 1931-2104. The exhibition, which was staged with the Glyn Hughes Foundation, was curated by Yianis Toumazis.
The art lovers and the followers of this artist will have the opportunity to acquire important work (at studio prices) from his different periods. The profits from the sales will contribute to the smooth running of the foundation and we would like to thank the gallery for the space availability at basic costs.
