BirdLife Cyprus is a registered NGO that works to conserve wild birds, their habitats and wider biodiversity in Cyprus, through research, monitoring, lobbying and conservation and awareness-raising actions.
Only taking a break for the hotter, holiday months of June, July and August, BirdLife Cyprus organises a full and varied programme of Field Meetings at various locations island-wide. Most of the field meetings concentrate on discovering the birds that are using an area during the time of year when the meeting is scheduled. All the well known birdwatching spots, including many designated as Important Bird Areas, are visited throughout the year, from Paphos in the west to Paralimini in the east.
Asprokremmos Dam, Larnaca Salt Lake, Oroklini Marsh, Achna Dam and the Troodos mountains are amongst the locations where BirdLife Cyprus members and friends can meet under the guidance of an experienced leader, and discover the birds of the Cypriot countryside. Some of those who attend are 'old-hands' and come along to as many meetings as they can. Others pick and chose the locations near to their home and some are 'first-timers' keen to meet others with an interest in birds, as well as be introduced to the island's avifauna. Therefore, the level of knowledge amongst attendees is varied.
The birds of Cyprus are out there for us all to enjoy and the BirdLife Cyprus field meetings are an ideal way to be introduced to them. All you need to bring with you to the field is enthusiasm, a pair of binoculars if possible and a flask of coffee for the inevitable refreshment break.
BirdLife organises field meetings (the articipation is at one’s own risk) which require light to moderate exercise. Please contact the field trip leader for more information on difficulty, distances and terrain of a particular field trip. A flask of coffee and sandwiches are a must!
