19th Pancyprian Pomegranate Festival in Ormideia: A Celebration of Tradition and Culture
The pomegranate from the village of Ormideia has long held a significant place in agricultural exhibitions and Cypriot exports. The first mention of Ormideia's pomegranates in the press appeared in 1933 in the newspaper Proteifousa, which stated: "The loading of pomegranates by sailing ship from Ormidia continues." A year later, in 1934, the newspaper Proini reported: "A shipment of 25,000 oka (30,800 kg) of Cypriot pomegranates from the village of Ormideia is being prepared for export to England. Ormideia is the primary pomegranate production area in our region."
The 19th Pancyprian Pomegranate Festival in Ormideia, organized by the Ormideia Community Council, the Ormideia Cultural Club "TO RODI," and the Ormideia Cultural Club, will take place on Saturday, 21 September 2024, starting at 18:00 in the Central Square of Ormideia. This festival highlights the cultural and agricultural heritage of our community, with the pomegranate as the star—a key product of Ormideia, valued since ancient times for its taste and health benefits.
The festival program offers activities for all ages, providing a fun-filled experience for the entire family. A Children's Corner will entertain younger guests. On the Main Stage, the "Makrydromos" Music Ensemble will perform, featuring Dimitris Mesimeris, Frederiki Tobazou, Dimitris Souroullas, Katerina Paraschou, Paris Paraschou, and Andreas Elesnitsalis, alongside musicians Pantelis Ionas, Giorgos Hatzipapas, Raphael Agapiou, Giorgos Zenios, and Mario Giorgitsis. Before the concert, a traditional music program will be presented by Christos Isidorou, Angeliki Hatzivasileiou, and Theofanis Theofanous, with performances by the dance troupes of the Ormideia Cultural Club "TO RODI," the Ormideia Cultural Club, and Elena's Dance School.
Pomegranate Stands will offer a variety of delicious traditional treats and pomegranate-based products, including juice, ice cream, palouze, siousioukko, and other delicacies. Street food vendors will also be available.
